Ingredients and Substitution

Whipping up this Honey Mustard Vinaigrette calls for a few key ingredients, let's break it down:

  • Apple cider vinegar: Provides a tangy kick that brightens the vinaigrette. You can swap in white wine vinegar for a slightly milder tang, lemon juice if you're after a citrusy note or even balsamic vinegar.
  • Extra virgin olive oil: This oil is the foundation, offering a smooth texture and subtle flavour. For a different twist, try avocado oil; it's just as silky and packs a punch of healthy fats.
  • Wholegrain mustard: Adds a hearty, rustic spice. Dijon mustard can step in as a substitute, lending a smoother, more refined element to your dressing.
  • Honey: Sweets the pot with its natural sugars. If honey isn't your jam, maple syrup makes a great vegan-friendly alternative, offering a deeper, more robust sweetness.

Each substitution nudges the flavour profile in a new direction, so don't be afraid to play around and find your perfect blend.

Consider adding minced garlic, some fresh herbs like thyme or parsley, or a dash of lemon juice for an extra layer of complexity.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Pour the extra virgin olive oil and apple cider vinegar into a glass jar, taking care to measure precisely for balance.
  2. Add honey for that sweet depth, then a hearty dollop of wholegrain mustard for a kick.
  3. Season with sea salt, and taste as you go, for that perfect savoury edge, remembering, less is often more.
  4. Give one final shake, vigorously now, until ingredients dance together in zesty harmony.
  5. Adjust to your liking, more honey or mustard perhaps, personalising your vinaigrette masterpiece.

What Can I Use It On?

You've just whisked up a golden batch of Honey Mustard Vinaigrette and the possibilities are endless, so go on, give your greens the glow-up they deserve!

1. Salad Dressing: Drizzle this tangy treasure over your green salads, it clings to each leaf with zest and zeal. OR mix it into a potato salad for a creamy yet light twist that's sure to impress the neighbourhood at your next cookout.

2. Marinade: Use it as a marinade for chicken, pork, or tofu. Let the proteins soak up the flavours before grilling or baking. OR add a dollop on your grilled chicken breast or steak it transforms the simple to sublime.

3. Roasted Vegetables: Toss roasted vegetables with the vinaigrette for a caramelized and savoury twist. Great on beets or brassicas such as cauliflower and broccoli.

4. Sandwich Spread: Spread the vinaigrette on sandwiches or wraps for a zesty kick.

5. Dip for Finger Foods: Serve it as a dip for chicken tenders, pretzels, or veggies at your next gathering.

With this homemade Honey Mustard Vinaigrette, you'll never go back to store-bought dressings.

Common Questions and Tips

Can I make this honey mustard dressing ahead of time?

Absolutely, you can whip up this dressing in advance. It actually melds the flavours more cohesively when allowed to sit for a bit. Just give it a good shake before drizzling over your greens.

How long will the vinaigrette keep?

Stored in a sealed container in the fridge, your homemade vinaigrette stays fresh for up to two weeks. Remember to let it come to room temperature and shake well before using it again.

Use quality ingredients!

Since this recipe relies on a few key components, using high-quality cider vinegar, extra virgin olive oil, and mustard will significantly enhance the overall flavour.
