AMERICAN MUSTARD DRESSING IN A BLACK BOWL WITH A YELLOW MUSTARD SMEAR ON THE SIDE

What is American mustard?

American mustard comes in two colours brown and yellow and they are both mild flavoured mustards.

Brown American mustard is made with both black and yellow mustard seeds, vinegar and spices. It has a coarse texture as some of the mustard seeds are kept whole. It is a bit more complex, it tastes earthy and a bit spicy. This is the one you will find in most American delis and in Australia is referred to as whole grain or seeded mustard.

The yellow mustard is made from mustard seeds, vinegar, spices and turmeric which gives it its sunny colour. The yellow American mustard is the one usually referred to in most US recipes and popular on hot dogs and definitely the star of the show in this dressing.
