Spiralizers not only bring the WOW factor to your salads but are a handy tool for making low-carb noodles, perfect for paleo and low-carb diets.

Spiralizers have been made popular with low-carb and paleo dieters; spiralizers have quickly become a health trend even though they have been around for years.

Turning your fruits and vegetables into "noodles" of varying thicknesses. There are two main types; the handheld variety works by twisting the vegetables, and the bench-style, which works by cranking the vegetables horizontally.

The Basics Of Spiralizing

The basic concept behind a spiralizer involves using various blades to slice and shape your chosen produce.

  • Preparation: Wash and peel your vegetables if needed. Trim the ends to fit into the spiralizer.
  • Setup: Attach the spiralizer securely to your countertop using the suction base for stability.
  • Selecting Blades: Choose the blade that gives you the desired cutting style, whether it's thin noodles or wide ribbons.
  • Positioning the Vegetable: Securely place the vegetable between the prongs or onto a holder for consistent and safe spiralizing.
  • Rotating the Handle: Turn the handle to rotate the vegetable against the blade. The blade will create beautiful spirals or noodles as you rotate.
  • Collecting Spirals: The spiralized vegetable will come out on the other side of the blade. Use a designated collection area or container, if available, to gather your spirals neatly.
  • Long Spirals: You may need to use some kitchen to cut them into manageable pieces as sometimes they can be a bit long.

Types Of Spiralizes

1. Handheld Spiralizers:
Compact and portable, handheld spiralizers are great for quick and small-scale spiralizing. They have a twisting mechanism that processes vegetables through a small blade, creating spirals directly onto the plate or bowl. Perfect for beginners and those with limited kitchen space. The Betty Bossi Spiralizer is a good example.

2. Countertop Spiralizers:
Versatile and designed for larger quantities and diverse vegetables, countertop spiralizers are handy kitchen gadgets. They come with interchangeable blades, allowing you to create various spiral shapes and thicknesses. Some models even have suction cups or clamps for stability during use. My favourite is the Paderno 4 Blade Spiralizer.

3. Manual Crank Spiralizers:
Similar to countertop models, manual crank spiralizers use a hand-crank mechanism to spiralize vegetables. These models often come with a clamp for stability and can handle a variety of vegetables with ease. They are popular due to their simplicity and durability.

4. Electric Spiralizers:
Effortless and quick, electric spiralizers automate the spiralizing process with their electricity-powered mechanism. They are perfect for those who prioritize convenience and efficiency in the kitchen. Electric spiralizers often offer multiple blade options for customization.

5. Vertical Spiralizers:
Vertical spiralizers have a unique design that allows you to load the vegetable vertically, simplifying the spiralizing process. This type is known for producing longer and more uniform spirals. Additionally, vertical spiralizers are usually easy to clean and store.

6. Ribbon Spiralizers:
Unlike most spiralizers that create noodle-like spirals, ribbon spiralizers specialize in producing wide, ribbon-shaped cuts. They are ideal for creating visually appealing salads, garnishes, or wraps with a broader, flatter profile.

Attachment Spiralizers:
Designed to work with existing kitchen appliances such as stand mixers or food processors, attachment spiralizers add versatility to your kitchen gadgets by providing an additional spiralizing function.

What Types of Vegetables Are Good for Spiralizing

When it comes to spiralizing vegetables, there are several types that work really well.

Some of the best vegetables for spiralizing include zucchini, carrots, cucumbers, sweet potatoes, and beets.

These vegetables have a firm texture and hold their shape nicely when spiralized.

They also offer a great variety in terms of color and flavor, making your salads visually appealing and delicious.
