More on Poppy Seeds

Poppy seeds are tiny oilseeds from opium poppies, so yes if you eat enough of them you may fail a drug test! They have a fresh, slightly nutty flavour and aroma with a crisp, crunchy texture.

Nutritionally they are high in fibre, B vitamins and quite a few minerals (calcium, phosphorus, iron, magnesium and zinc). They help in digestion, heart health and immune health. As well as a rich source of manganese which important for bone health and blood clotting.

They are usually used in baked goods such as cakes, muffins, bread and bagels. But, I just love them in salads either whole or ground up into a paste.

They will keep for up to 24 months if you store them away from direct sunlight in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. If you live in a hot and humid climate then I strongly suggest you keep your poppy seeds in the fridge.

What Can I Use It On?

This Lemon Poppyseed Vinaigrette is a great all-round salad dressing that you can use on just about anything and everything. Try it on your:

  • Green Salads
  • Avocado Salads
  • Tossed Salads
  • Bean Salads
  • Potato and Pasta Salads
  • Coleslaws
  • Salads featuring protein such as chicken, salmon, beef
  • Brassica salads either roasted or steamed - kale, cauliflower, caulilini, broccoli, broccolini, romanesco.
